Wood sculptures are created through the process called wood carving. There are different styles of carving a wood such as chip carving, relief carving, Scandinavian flat-plane, caricature carving, love spoon, treen and whittling. Each style of wood carving results to different kinds of wood sculptures.
A certain kind of technique must be applied to a certain kind of wood. This is because each wood has a different texture and some are easily broken when not carved the right way. The most usual kinds of woods that are used for wood carving are Tupelo and Basswood. Other kinds of woods chosen for wood carving are mahogany, American walnut, chestnut and teak.
You can see wood sculptures on almost every household. This is because it comes in a very affordable price. Some people will do wood carving for business and some just do it for recreation. Wood carving are not done by a lot of people because a lot of creativity and patience must be put into this kind of craft. You must have steady hands to be able to carve the smallest detail in a wood sculpture.
This kind of art piece is more affordable and most common because the material can be seen anywhere. Also, making sculptures out of wood is easier as compared to stone and metal sculptures. If you are also willing to learn how to carve, there are a lot of tutorials that can be read and viewed online and the materials can be bought in any hardware store.
Wood sculptures maybe common but there is a lot of hard work put into it. There are a lot of intricate designs that are already coming out today and thanks to the creative minds of artists we are not stuck with just the animal and human sculptures.
